North Carolina congressional candidate drops out of race after Trump endorses rival

GOP Candidate Drops Out of North Carolina Congressional Race

Kelly Daughtry, once leading the GOP primary race in North Carolina’s 13th Congressional District, announced the suspension of her campaign on Thursday. Her decision came after former President Trump endorsed her opponent, Brad Knott.

Acknowledging Trump’s Endorsement

Daughtry stated, “In light of President Trump’s endorsement of Brad Knott for the Congressional seat in District 13, it has become clear that a pathway to victory is no longer feasible.” She emphasized her belief in the democratic process and respect for Trump’s endorsement.

Focus on Conservative Causes

While ending her campaign, Daughtry affirmed her commitment to conservative values. She pledged to concentrate on conservative voter registration efforts and supporting conservative judicial candidates in the upcoming November elections.

Primary Results and Runoff

In the primary election held on March 5, Daughtry secured 27.4 percent of the vote, leading over Brad Knott’s 18.7 percent. However, with neither candidate meeting the required threshold, a runoff was scheduled for May 14.

Endorsement and Call for Unity

Daughtry endorsed Knott’s candidacy and urged the Republican Party to unite behind him. Trump’s endorsement of Knott further solidified her decision. She emphasized the need for party unity and encouraged her supporters to back Knott’s campaign.

Looking Ahead

With Daughtry stepping aside, Knott is expected to become the Republican nominee for the district. The 13th District, currently held by Rep. Wiley Nickel (D-N.C.), will see a Democrat, Frank Pierce, competing against the Republican nominee in the general election in November.

Final Words of Gratitude

Daughtry expressed gratitude to her supporters and called for Republican unity to secure victory in November. She pledged her continued support for the party’s efforts to win the upcoming elections.
