According to reports, Iranian Foreign Minister Amir Abdollahian conveyed this development during a recent phone conversation with Estonian counterpart Margus Tsahkna. The release was confirmed through an Iranian readout of the conversation.
The Case of Ann Tessa Joseph
Among the Indian crew members was Ann Tessa Joseph, the lone female cadet. She was among those released after the vessel, with ties to Israel, was seized by Iran’s military on April 13.
Iran’s Explanation
In response to Estonia’s inquiries regarding the Portuguese ship’s seizure and the release of its Estonian crew, Minister Amirabdollahian explained that the vessel had turned off its radar in Iranian territorial waters, posing a threat to navigation security. Despite this, all crew members had been released on humanitarian grounds.
The Path Forward
While the ship’s captain’s presence is requested for the return of the Estonian crew, Iran has indicated that all crew members, including the Estonians, can depart for their home countries.
