Before the clock even struck 9 a.m., the clinic’s metal gate stood wide open, beckoning early visitors. Inside, the waiting room buzzed with activity; by a quarter to nine, it was already packed. A woman tenderly nursed a little boy in one corner, while nearby, another woman fought back tears, comforted by the supportive presence of a man beside her, his eyes glued to his phone screen.
This wasn’t just any ordinary morning at A Hialeah Woman’s Care Center. A hastily taped sign on the door declared the reason for the early rush: “EFFECTIVE May 1st, 2024,” it announced in bold print, “The Florida governor has issued a Six (6) week ban on abortions … until voters make a choice in the November elections.”
For Florida, a state known for its evolving political landscape, this new law marked a significant shift. Despite its recent tilt towards conservatism and Republican dominance in state politics, Florida had long maintained one of the highest abortion rates in the nation. Even after the landmark Roe v. Wade decision was overturned in 2022, and neighboring Southern states began tightening their abortion regulations, Florida remained an outlier with comparatively liberal laws on the procedure. This made it a haven for thousands of women from neighboring states who sought to terminate their pregnancies legally.
Yet, statistics revealed a stark reality: over 90 percent of the more than 84,000 abortions performed in the state last year were for Florida residents.
