A 43-year-old woman from San Francisco, Aziza Graves, has been convicted of shoplifting over $60,000 worth of items from a Target store using self-checkout. The San Francisco District Attorney’s Office announced that Graves was found guilty of one felony count of grand theft and 52 misdemeanor counts of petty theft related to multiple incidents at the same Target location.
The Target store is situated in a shopping center in the southwest neighborhood of San Francisco, near the San Francisco Zoo and San Francisco State University. Prosecutors revealed that Graves stole from the same Target store on 120 occasions over a span of just over a year.
Assistant District Attorney Conrad Del Rosario, who handled the case, stated that the jury carefully reviewed a substantial amount of evidence presented over several weeks. The incidents occurred between October 3, 2020, and November 16, 2021. During this period, Graves would enter the store, use the self-checkout to scan items, and then insert only a single coin or bill into the machine before leaving with the unpaid merchandise. The jury determined that the total value of the stolen goods exceeded $60,000.
Graves was also observed selling the stolen items at UN Plaza in the city. Additionally, she was convicted of one count of misdemeanor petty theft for stealing from an Abercrombie and Fitch store in San Francisco.
District Attorney Brooke Jenkins emphasized the impact of Graves’ actions on retailers and the community, stressing the need for accountability. Jenkins stated that Graves’ repeated thefts significantly disrupt retailers’ operations and their ability to serve the public. She affirmed the commitment of the district attorney’s office, along with local law enforcement partners, to pursue and prosecute individuals engaged in such brazen thefts.
Graves is currently out on bond, and her sentencing is scheduled for May 24. Prosecutors anticipate that she could face more than three years in prison for her crimes.
