Sofía Vergara recently shared insights into the reasons behind her divorce from Joe Manganiello in an interview with El País published on Jan. 15. The “Modern Family” star disclosed that their seven-year marriage ended due to divergent views on having children.
Vergara explained, “My marriage broke up because my husband was younger; he wanted to have kids and I didn’t want to be an old mom.” She expressed concerns about being fair to the baby and clarified that while she respects those who choose to have children later in life, it’s a path she no longer desires.
Joe Manganiello, 47, was Vergara’s second husband. Her first marriage was to Joe Gonzalez, with whom she shares a 32-year-old son named Manolo Vergara. They divorced in 1993.
The actress, who became a mother at 19, mentioned that at 51, she is now “ready to be a grandmother, not a mother.” She added that if love comes her way, the partner must already have children, considering her age and the natural progression of life.
Vergara and Manganiello, who tied the knot in November 2015, confirmed their separation in July 2023. They expressed their mutual decision to divorce and requested privacy during this challenging time. Manganiello filed for divorce on July 19, with court documents revealing that the couple had been separated since July 2. In her legal response, Vergara cited irreconcilable differences and sought to uphold their prenuptial agreement. Both parties requested the court to divide their assets, including jewelry, artwork, and earnings acquired before and during their marriage.
