Detained US Army Soldier to Be Held Until July by Russian Court for Allegedly Causing ‘Significant Damage

Russian authorities have disclosed that an American soldier, Staff Sgt. Gordon Black, is being held on theft charges in Vladivostok, with his detention extended until July 2. Black, who enlisted in the Army in 2008 and was stationed in South Korea, traveled to Vladivostok for personal reasons before his arrest.

The Pervomaisky District Court stated that Black’s detention was deemed necessary to prevent him from evading authorities. He is accused of stealing from a 32-year-old woman, causing significant damage. The woman, with whom Black had an argument during his visit to Russia, filed a police report accusing him of theft.

Black’s journey to Russia raises questions, as he was supposed to return to the U.S. but instead traveled through China to Vladivostok. The Army is conducting an investigation into the circumstances of his travel and potential consequences. It’s noted that official travel to Russia is prohibited for military personnel, in accordance with Department of Defense and State Department guidelines.

In summary, Black’s situation involves legal complexities and raises concerns about his unauthorized travel, prompting both legal and administrative inquiries.
