After 25 years, unraveling ‘The Mummy’

When “The Mummy” hit theaters in 1999, it defied expectations by becoming a massive success. Despite initial doubts from director Stephen Sommers, leading actor Brendan Fraser, and even the titular mummy, Arnold Vosloo, the film grossed $417 million worldwide, saving Universal Studios from financial trouble. Now, 25 years later, it remains a beloved classic, with the cast reflecting fondly on their time making the movie.

To commemorate the anniversary, Newsweek caught up with Rachel Weisz, Arnold Vosloo, Patricia Velasquez, and Kevin J. O’Connor for an inside look at the making of the late 90s gem.

Set in the 1920s, “The Mummy” follows the adventures of Rick (played by Brendan Fraser), aspiring Egyptologist Evelyn “Eevee” Carnahan (portrayed by Rachel Weisz), and her charming yet hapless brother Jonathan (played by John Hannah). Accidentally awakening the ancient mummy Imhotep, the trio finds themselves embroiled in a quest to stop his plans for resurrecting his deceased lover and wreaking havoc on the world.

Despite initial uncertainties, Arnold Vosloo, who played Imhotep, still receives adoration from fans for his role. Reflecting on the movie’s enduring appeal, Vosloo emphasizes the power of its love story between Imhotep and Anck-su-namun, as well as the budding romance between Rick and Eevee. According to him, these relationships drive the plot and set “The Mummy” apart from other adventure films.

However, the journey to bring Imhotep to life wasn’t without its challenges. Vosloo initially questioned his role upon hearing about the costume requirements, but eventually embraced the character’s complexity. Similarly, Kevin J. O’Connor, who played Beni Gabor, expressed surprise at the film’s success, especially considering the competition from “The Phantom Menace.”

The film’s blend of action, horror, comedy, and romance captivated audiences worldwide. Patricia Velasquez, who portrayed Anck-su-namun, recalls her experience working with Vosloo and praises his dedication to the craft. However, the elaborate costumes, particularly Vosloo’s revealing outfit and Velasquez’s body paint, posed discomfort during filming.

Despite these challenges, “The Mummy” boasted impressive practical effects and set designs, capturing the essence of ancient Egypt. The iconic library scene, filmed in one take, stands as a testament to the crew’s technical prowess and attention to detail.

Looking back, the cast acknowledges the profound impact “The Mummy” had on their careers and the enduring affection fans still have for the film. Weisz, Fraser, and O’Connor attribute its lasting popularity to its charm and likability, while Vosloo marvels at the unpredictable magic of the film industry.

As “The Mummy” celebrates its 25th anniversary, it remains a testament to the enduring appeal of adventure cinema and the enduring legacy of a beloved classic.
