“In a new image from ‘Inside Out 2,’ Joy tackles Riley’s belief system.”

Pixar Animation Studios is gearing up for the release of Inside Out 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the beloved 2015 film Inside Out. Fans can expect to hear the familiar voice of Amy Poehler reprising her role as Joy, one of the key emotions residing in the mind of the protagonist, Riley (portrayed by Kensington Tallman). A new image featured in Empire Magazine offers a glimpse into Joy’s journey as she grapples with the challenges of Riley’s teenage years.

In the image, Joy is depicted gazing wistfully at something beyond the frame while clutching a globe, symbolizing her ability to perceive the world around her. Standing behind Joy is Sadness (voiced by Phyllis Smith), whose expression appears more bewildered than sorrowful. Unlike the first film, which focused on Riley’s experiences as an 11 and 12-year-old, Inside Out 2 delves into Riley’s life as a 13-year-old navigating the complexities of adolescence. A new thematic element introduced in the sequel is the “Belief System,” described by writer Dave Holstein as a crucial emotional component that adds depth to the story.

Holstein explains that the “Belief System” was initially omitted from the script but was later reinstated as a central theme driving the narrative. He emphasizes its significance in shaping the storyline, stating, “There’s something I want to see at the beginning of this movie, and possibly the end of this movie, that tells me what the movie is.” Inside Out 2 reintroduces familiar emotions such as Anger, Fear, and Disgust, while introducing new characters like Envy, Anxiety, Ennui, and Embarrassment.

Directed by Kelsey Mann in his directorial debut, Inside Out 2 features a script co-written by Holstein and Meg LeFauve. Mark Nielsen produces for Pixar in collaboration with Walt Disney Pictures, with Peter Docter serving as executive producer. The film boasts an ensemble cast including Kyle MacLachlan, Diane Lane, Yvette Nicole Brown, and more, promising another emotionally rich and visually captivating journey into the inner workings of the human mind.
