During grilling by Congress, NYC schools boss defiantly insists antisemitic incidents have been dealt with in ‘appropriate fashion

Congress Grills Schools Chancellor David Banks Over Handling of Antisemitism in NYC Public Schools

In a tense congressional hearing, Schools Chancellor David Banks defended his response to antisemitic incidents in New York City classrooms. Lawmakers, particularly Rep.

Brandon Williams and Rep. Elise Stefanik, criticized Banks for not taking stronger action, including the reassignment rather than termination of a principal at Hillcrest High School following a riot against a Jewish teacher.

Banks stood firm, stating that the DOE responds appropriately to incidents of hate but cannot prevent them entirely. Despite acknowledging the prevalence of antisemitism, he emphasized that all forms of hate have no place in NYC public schools.

The hearing, which drew attention from students, parents, and advocates for Jewish rights, highlighted ongoing concerns about addressing hate in educational settings.
