Is it worth the extra money? M4 iPad Pro vs M2 iPad Air.

The 2024 iPad Pro brings a significant performance boost as the first Apple device featuring the M4 chip. Accompanying it is the new mid-tier M2 iPad Air, now available in two sizes for the first time. So, what sets these 2024 iPads apart, and is the high-end worth the extra cost? Let’s dive into our detailed comparison of the M4 iPad Pro versus the M2 iPad Air.

Back in 2022, the iPad Air 5 with the M1 chip blurred the lines between mid-range and high-end iPads, offering enticing features at a starting price significantly lower than the 11-inch iPad Pro. Now, the 2024 M2 iPad Air lineup (6th gen) brings even more choice and power compared to its predecessor.

However, the introduction of the M4 iPad Pro raises the bar, albeit at a higher cost this year, starting at $999 and $1,299. This makes the price difference between the iPad Air and Pro models range from $300 to $400.

Performance-wise, the key distinction lies in the upgraded M4 chip of the iPad Pro. Apple claims it delivers up to 50% faster CPU performance, 4x faster GPU, and improved memory bandwidth compared to the M2 chip.

Moreover, the new OLED display featured in both sizes of the iPad Pro offers brighter specular highlights, deeper blacks, better shadow and low-light detail, among other enhancements. Additionally, users have the option to upgrade the 1TB or 2TB models of the M4 iPad Pro with nano-texture display glass.

Another notable difference is the battery life, which remains consistent with previous iPad models: 10 hours of web or video use on WiFi, and 9 hours of web use with cellular.

Storage options have also been updated, with the M4 iPad Pro starting at 256GB and going up to 2TB, while the M2 iPad Air ranges from 64GB to 1TB.

In terms of camera capabilities, the M4 iPad Pro rear camera system features a 12MP wide lens, LiDAR Scanner, and Retina Flash with True Tone. However, it has omitted the 10MP ultra-wide lens present in the M2 iPad Pro, aligning its capabilities more closely with the M2 iPad Air.

Ultimately, choosing between the M4 iPad Pro and M2 iPad Air depends on whether you’re a professional user or someone who can benefit from the advanced features of the M4 chip. For those seeking a budget-friendly option without compromising on features, the M2 iPad Air or even the discounted M1 iPad Air could be appealing alternatives.
