Scientists say new analysis of Beethoven’s hair reveals possible cause of mysterious ailments.

Recent research analyzing authenticated locks of Ludwig van Beethoven’s hair suggests that the composer may have suffered from lead poisoning, shedding new light on the ailments he endured throughout his life, including his deafness. Beethoven, renowned for his classical compositions, faced recurring gastrointestinal issues, two jaundice attacks, and severe liver disease, which ultimately led to his death at age 56.

Beethoven had expressed a desire for medical professionals to study his health issues after his passing, hoping for some posthumous understanding. To honor his wish, an international team embarked on a mission nearly a decade ago, analyzing Beethoven’s authenticated hair locks to sequence his genome and unravel the mysteries behind his health problems.

The results, published in a 2023 report, unveiled significant genetic risk factors for liver disease and a hepatitis B infection in Beethoven. However, they provided no clarity on the origins of his deafness or gastrointestinal problems. Despite the inconclusive findings, Beethoven’s genome was made public, encouraging further research into his health.

Recent analysis of Beethoven’s hair locks has uncovered remarkably high levels of lead, arsenic, and mercury, persisting nearly two centuries after his death. These findings, published in the journal Clinical Chemistry, offer new insights into the composer’s chronic health issues and the intricacies of his life as a musician.

The revelation of lead poisoning stems from a twist in the investigation, as the hair lock previously attributed to Beethoven turned out to be from a woman. However, subsequent analysis of two authenticated locks revealed alarming levels of lead, indicative of lead poisoning.

While the lead levels detected in Beethoven’s hair are associated with gastrointestinal and renal ailments and hearing loss, they are not considered high enough to be the sole cause of death. Nevertheless, Beethoven experienced symptoms of lead poisoning throughout his life, including muscle cramps and renal abnormalities.

The source of Beethoven’s lead exposure likely stemmed from his consumption habits, such as drinking plumbed wine, a practice common during his time. Additionally, his love for fish, sourced from the polluted Danube River, may have contributed to arsenic and mercury accumulation.

These findings provide valuable insights into Beethoven’s health struggles and add another layer of complexity to his life story. Despite his immense talent and contributions to music, Beethoven’s life was marred by physical ailments and personal hardships, shaping the nuanced narrative behind his musical genius.
