Grizzlies send Victor Oladipo and picks to Houston for Steven Adams

The Memphis Grizzlies and Houston Rockets have finalized a significant trade deal, with center Steven Adams heading to the Rockets in exchange for guard Victor Oladipo and three second-round draft picks. This transaction was confirmed by both teams on Thursday, marking a notable shift in their respective roster compositions.

As part of the trade, the Grizzlies will receive two second-round picks for the upcoming 2024 NBA draft and an additional pick for the 2025 draft, as reported by sources familiar with the deal. This influx of draft assets provides Memphis with valuable resources for future roster development and strategic planning.

Steven Adams, a seasoned veteran at 30 years old, joins the Rockets’ lineup after undergoing right knee surgery in January 2023. Despite his injury, Adams is expected to make a full recovery in time for the 2024-25 NBA season. His addition to the Rockets’ roster brings a combination of physicality, rebounding prowess, and leadership, serving as a valuable asset both on and off the court. With head coach Ime Udoka prioritizing toughness and rebounding, Adams’ skill set aligns well with the team’s strategic objectives.

On the financial front, the trade also benefits the Grizzlies by shedding $12.4 million in guaranteed salary for the 2024-25 season. This transaction helps the team remain compliant with the NBA’s salary cap regulations, positioning them favorably for future roster maneuvers and financial flexibility.

Meanwhile, Victor Oladipo, whose contract is set to expire, brings a wealth of experience and talent to the Grizzlies’ backcourt. While Oladipo’s return to play is currently uncertain due to injury, his potential impact on the team’s performance remains a significant factor to consider.

Despite facing various challenges, including injuries to key players like All-NBA guard Ja Morant, the Grizzlies maintain their competitive edge and strategic focus. With a high draft pick in the upcoming 2024 NBA draft and additional assets acquired through trades, Memphis is well-positioned to continue its trajectory of success and further strengthen its roster for the future.
