The Washington football program seems to have chosen a familiar face to lead its defense. As reported by Bruce Feldman of The Athletic on Sunday night, Steve Belichick, a former assistant coach with the New England Patriots, is anticipated to be named the program’s defensive coordinator. Steve, 36, is the son of the renowned Patriots coach, Bill Belichick, and has been involved in calling plays for the Patriots’ defense over the past four seasons.
Steve Belichick started his journey with the Patriots in 2012 as a defensive assistant, gradually moving up the coaching ladder. He assumed the role of safeties coach in 2016 and took over play-calling duties in 2019. Despite the Patriots’ challenging 4-13 season record in 2021, Belichick’s defensive strategy showcased impressive results. The team ranked seventh in the NFL for average yards allowed per game (301.6) and held opponents to the seventh-fewest total yards (5,127).
Under Belichick’s guidance, the Patriots’ run defense particularly excelled, boasting an average of just 3.3 yards allowed per rushing attempt, the best performance during the Bill Belichick era. Steve Belichick now joins Brennan Carroll, son of former Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, on Jedd Fisch’s staff. Carroll is slated to be the team’s offensive coordinator and offensive line coach in the upcoming 2024 season. The association between Belichick and Fisch goes back to their collaboration when Fisch served as New England’s quarterbacks coach in 2020.
