UPS Plans Layoffs at North Portland Facility
United Parcel Service (UPS) has announced that it will lay off 331 employees at its sorting facility in North Portland. The decision comes as UPS experiences a decline in shipping volume across its network, leading to the closure of the facility on North Basin Avenue, known as the “Portland Day Sort.”
Most of the affected employees are part-time workers, although some full-time staff and management positions will also be impacted. UPS stated that the layoffs are expected to be permanent due to the ongoing reduction in work volume at the facility.
In response to the layoffs, UPS has committed to assisting affected employees in finding alternative positions within the company, where possible. The layoffs will affect both union and non-union workers, with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters representing union employees.
UPS emphasized that the decision to close the facility was made as part of routine operational assessments to align with changes in shipping demands. Despite the impact on employees and their families, UPS reaffirmed its dedication to providing support throughout the transition process.
The closure of the North Portland facility is scheduled for April 18, 2024, as UPS continues to prioritize delivering reliable service while adjusting to shifts in the market.
