How AI is helping the search for extraterrestrial life

Mr. Diamond, who heads the Seti Institute, explains that their mission, abbreviated as Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (Seti), is akin to finding a needle in a haystack – a challenging endeavor that seeks to uncover signs of life beyond our solar system.

However, thanks to advancements in technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), the search for extraterrestrial intelligence is undergoing a transformation. Seti’s collaboration with the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in New Mexico exemplifies this shift, with AI being utilized to sift through vast amounts of data collected by the observatory’s Very Large Array. This AI system can process an astounding two terabytes of data per second, aiding in the detection of potential signals from alien civilizations.

Moreover, AI enables Seti to expand its search parameters beyond traditional methods. Instead of solely focusing on narrowband signals similar to those used by humans, AI allows for the exploration of wider bandwidths, potentially revealing new patterns indicative of advanced extraterrestrial technology.

Another initiative, Breakthrough Listen, backed by significant private sector funding, is on a mission to scan a million stars and 100 galaxies for signs of intelligent life. AI plays a pivotal role in this project, helping to discern genuine signals from background noise, thus enhancing the efficiency of the search.

AI isn’t confined to deep space exploration; it’s also aiding in the search for life closer to home. Nasa’s Perseverance rover, currently exploring Mars, has utilized AI-powered instruments to detect organic compounds on the red planet’s surface. Additionally, the Carnegie Institution for Science employs AI to analyze rock samples, achieving an impressive accuracy rate in identifying signs of past or present life.

While these advancements hold promise, they require further validation and rigorous study before definitive conclusions can be drawn. Nonetheless, with each technological breakthrough, the prospect of discovering extraterrestrial life becomes increasingly plausible.

As Mr. Diamond reflects, the journey towards this monumental discovery is characterized not by immediate results but by the collective effort and progress made along the way.
