House Minority Speaker Hakeem Jeffries and other top Democrats have pledged their support for House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), vowing not to let him lose his position amidst recent turmoil. This announcement comes in response to a motion put forward by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) over a month ago, which sought to remove Johnson from his role as Speaker in an attempt to block the passage of a crucial aid bill for Ukraine.
In a joint statement released on Tuesday morning, Jeffries, Democratic Whip Katherine Clark, and Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar stated their intention to reject Greene’s motion and move forward from what they described as a chapter of “Pro-Putin Republican obstruction.” Highlighting Johnson’s efforts to shepherd a $95 billion aid package through the House, the Democratic leaders emphasized the importance of supporting his leadership.
“We have consistently stood against MAGA extremism,” the statement read, “and we will continue to do so.”
Internally, the decision to support Johnson was widely supported among House Democrats. While acknowledging personal reservations about Johnson’s political affiliations, one House Democrat stressed the importance of maintaining stability and functionality within the government.
“There was a consensus that we cannot afford more chaos,” the lawmaker explained. “While some of us may have concerns about Johnson, enough support exists to ensure government operations continue.”
Responding to her defeat, Greene took to social media to express her frustration, labeling Johnson as the “Democratic Speaker of the House” and insinuating a backroom deal between Johnson and Democrats. Despite her setback, Greene vowed to continue her fight against what she perceives as bipartisan collusion.
“If Democrats want to support him as Speaker, I’ll give them the opportunity to do so,” Greene declared. “It’s time for Americans to see the truth about the Uniparty. I’m ready to expose them.”
