Tuesday evening saw New Ulm High School’s second home track and field meet cut short by a dramatic onset of rain, thunder, and lightning. Despite the interruption, a few events managed to conclude before the weather intervened.
Competing alongside New Ulm were teams from Minnesota Valley Lutheran/New Ulm Cathedral, Redwood Valley, Marshall, and Tri-City United.
Among the events completed for the boys were the 100-meter dash, the 110-meter hurdles, and the 4×800 relay. For the girls, it was the 100-meter dash, the 100-meter hurdles, and the girls’ 4×800 relay.
Reflecting on the season thus far, New Ulm head coach Andrea Hanson noted a significant shift in the team’s attitude and work ethic. Whether due to increased competition within the team or heightened individual determination, Hanson praised her athletes’ dedication to success.
In the girls’ 100-meter dash, Redwood Valley’s Kendall Huhnerkoch claimed first place with a time of 13.99 seconds, followed closely by New Ulm’s Riley Wilson and Leah Brustad. Meanwhile, MVL/NUC dominated the girls’ 100-meter hurdles, securing three of the top five spots.
Brustad further showcased her talent by clinching victory in the girls’ high jump, clearing a height of 4 feet, 6 inches.
The girls’ 4×800 relay saw Redwood Valley’s team emerge triumphant, while the boys’ 100-meter dash was won by MVL/NUC’s Josh Bentler.
Despite the weather-shortened meet, Hanson expressed satisfaction with the team’s progress, particularly noting improvements in depth and individual performance. Looking ahead, the Eagles are gearing up for upcoming meets and the Section 2AA True Team track and field event.
