Exciting news out of Eastern Kentucky University! The men’s tennis team has had a stellar season, snagging 20 wins and making it to the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship. And now, for the first time ever, they’re heading to the UTR Sports NIT Championship! The tournament will be held at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, from May 5th to 8th, and you can catch all the action on Amazon Prime Video.
They’ll kick off the quarterfinals on May 5th against a yet-to-be-determined opponent. This marks a significant moment for the team, as it’s their first national postseason appearance since 2015, when they faced off against No. 5 Texas A&M in the NCAA Tournament. This year’s postseason berth is their fifth national tournament in program history, with four previous appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
While they fell short in the ASUN Conference Championship against Stetson, it’s been a remarkable season overall. The team’s racked up 20 wins, the second-highest in program history, and they’ve seen a massive improvement from last year, with 16 more wins than in 2023! Plus, they’re undefeated at home with a perfect 16-0 record, the best in the nation. Their success has even earned them a spot in the ITA team rankings for the first time, peaking at No. 74. And let’s not forget their historic win against No. 68 Stetson – the first victory against a ranked opponent in school history!
Individual accolades are pouring in too, with Evzen Holis making it to the First Team All-ASUN thanks to his impressive 16-10 singles record from the top two spots in the lineup.
In the UTR Sports NIT Championship, EKU will be facing off against tough competition from Liberty, North Alabama, Northwestern, Pacific, Santa Carla, St. Louis, and Tulsa. It’s shaping up to be an intense tournament, and we can’t wait to see how the Colonels perform on the national stage!
