Füllkrug’s rocket gives Dortmund slim advantage over PSG as Sancho shines.

As the final whistle echoed through the stadium, both teams seemed dazed, trying to make sense of what had just transpired. How had their combined efforts and mistakes led to just one goal? And amidst the chaos, could this truly be Borussia Dortmund’s moment?

Niclas Füllkrug’s goal in the first half settled the match, though the ensuing hour felt far from settled as Gregor Kobel’s goal seemed almost sacred, repelling PSG’s onslaught. Despite Kylian Mbappé’s efforts—52 touches, three shots on goal, and a post hit—he left empty-handed. Yet perhaps Dortmund had earned their fortune too. They could have easily netted more goals themselves, displaying a conviction and maturity not always associated with them.

Edin Terzic remained grounded in his assessment, acknowledging the small lead and the promising opportunity ahead. It wasn’t a miracle, but rather a resurrection of sorts. Did anyone, during Jadon Sancho’s struggles at Manchester United, believe he could still deliver a performance like this? Did Sancho himself? Yet here he was, revitalized and showcasing his talent on the grandest stage. This display surely gives Gareth Southgate something to ponder.

On the opposite flank, Ian Maatsen held his own in a captivating battle with Achraf Hakimi, while Nico Schlotterbeck and Mats Hummels stood out in defense. For PSG, Vitinha impressed in midfield, and Marquinhos’ interventions prevented a wider deficit. Yet, the game hinged on seized and missed opportunities, on the thinnest margins denying both Mbappé and Hakimi.

Füllkrug’s goal felt inevitable, signaling Dortmund’s settling after a shaky start. Sancho’s audacious play injected them with renewed vigor, reminding them of their capabilities. PSG surged after halftime, with Mbappé and Hakimi hitting the woodwork, but Dortmund’s defense held firm amidst the onslaught.

PSG’s perennial defensive issues surfaced again, inviting pressure and allowing Dortmund to dictate play. Despite their fatigue becoming apparent, Dortmund’s attackers continued to threaten. Terzic’s decision-making could be scrutinized, but with their attackers in top form, altering the lineup was a risky proposition.

Dortmund’s journey to this point has defied expectations. Facing PSG again will pose a new challenge, testing not just their skill but their resilience against an inevitable onslaught. While their victory secures qualification for next season’s competition, their Champions League campaign is far from over.
