The highly anticipated live-action adaptation of “Masters of the Universe” is taking a significant step forward, as Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films have set a release date for the movie: June 5, 2026.
Travis Knight, known for his work on “Kubo and the Two Strings” and “Bumblebee,” is set to direct the film, while Chris Butler is handling the screenplay, following initial drafts by David Callaham and Aaron and Adam Nee. The project is being produced by Robbie Brenner from Mattel Films and Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, and Steve Tisch from Escape Artists.
According to the official synopsis, the movie will introduce a 10-year-old Prince Adam, who crash-lands on Earth in a spaceship, separated from his magical Power Sword, the key to his home on Eternia. Nearly two decades later, Prince Adam embarks on a journey to retrieve the sword and defend his home planet against the villainous Skeletor. But to stand a chance against Skeletor, he must first unlock the mysteries of his past and transform into He-Man, the most powerful man in the Universe.
While casting details are yet to be announced, the confirmation that “Masters of the Universe” is moving forward is exciting news for fans of the beloved Mattel franchise. Originating as a line of action figures in 1982, followed by the animated series “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” in 1983, the franchise has maintained a dedicated following over the years.
This announcement follows the cancellation of a previous live-action adaptation at Netflix, with the Nee brothers attached to direct and Kyle Allen set to star. After significant investment, Netflix decided to halt the project, paving the way for Amazon MGM and Mattel Films to take the reins.
