What happens to your body when you have a broken heart?

Dealing with the aftermath of an unwelcome breakup or divorce can extend beyond the realm of emotional pain, affecting both your physical and mental well-being. Dr. Yasmine Omar, an assistant professor at Baylor College of Medicine, points out that while there isn’t a precise clinical definition for the term “heartbreak,” individuals often display symptoms of depression following significant life events.

Symptoms of clinical depression encompass a depressed mood, loss of interest or pleasure, unintentional weight changes, disturbances in sleep patterns, alterations in movement, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, difficulty concentrating, and even thoughts of self-harm. To receive a clinical depression diagnosis, these symptoms must be substantial and persist for at least two weeks.

Nevertheless, even if the severity falls short of clinical criteria, these symptoms can still exert a profound impact on individuals, particularly in the aftermath of significant events like a breakup or divorce. The intensity of these effects can vary but may result in challenges in daily functioning and overall well-being.
