Every American has likely fantasized about their ideal home at some point in their lives.
From a quaint cottage tucked away in the woods to a grand mansion complete with a pool, our dream homes often reflect our deepest aspirations and desires. But what do these dreams collectively look like, and how feasible are they?
In a recent survey conducted by Lombardo Homes involving over 900 Americans, insights were gained into the minds of many, revealing intriguing trends and preferences in the quest for the perfect dwelling.
The survey uncovered that when it comes to realizing their dream homes, 69% of Americans prefer the option of building rather than renovating.
As for the quintessential dream home, the survey indicates that it typically includes four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and spans approximately 4,600 square feet.
Certain key features such as a spacious kitchen, a generous backyard, and a prime location are considered essential by most dream home seekers.
It’s not just about the house itself, but also about what the surrounding neighborhood offers, with factors like proximity to good schools (56%), shopping centers (79%), and entertainment hubs (46%) ranking high on the list of priorities.
Luxury amenities are also highly sought after, with desires ranging from a multi-car garage to energy-efficient appliances and even a dedicated hobby room.
While suburban living is favored by the majority, a significant 19% yearn for the tranquility of the countryside, while 18% prefer the vibrancy of city life. Beachfront, waterfront, and mountain retreats also hold significant appeal for many dream home enthusiasts.
In terms of aesthetics, Americans tend to gravitate towards a blend of timeless and trendy. Contemporary, Victorian, and ranch-style exteriors are popular choices, with 77% favoring neutral paint tones over bold hues like blues and greens. Whites, off-whites, and greige dominate the preferred color palette.
However, there is a subset (27%) that dares to be bold with more vibrant interior color choices. Modern, contemporary, and farmhouse styles reign supreme for interior design, with a preference for minimalist over maximalist approaches.
Moreover, the survey reveals that each generation paints a unique picture of their ideal home. While there are some commonalities across Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z, there are also distinct preferences and trends that emerge based on age group.
Despite the dream of homeownership being deeply ingrained in the “American Dream,” for many, this aspiration remains out of reach. A notable 52% express doubts about ever achieving their ideal home, with Gen Z and Millennials leading the charge in disillusionment.
Cost emerges as a significant barrier, with dream homes priced between $500,000 and $1 million or more across the board.
Nevertheless, determination prevails, with 58% of respondents currently owning homes and 42% of renters harboring plans to become homeowners within the next five years.
