Alexander Michael Dominic MacDonald, a resident of Chelmsford, England, found himself in hot water this week, facing a hefty bill of $20,638 from United Airlines. The incident unfolded during a flight from London to Newark, New Jersey, in March.
Trouble began when the 30-year-old MacDonald engaged in a loud argument with his girlfriend, escalating into a confrontation with a flight attendant. Witnesses reported that MacDonald became increasingly aggressive, both verbally and physically, prompting concern among passengers and crew alike.
According to court documents, MacDonald’s behavior became belligerent and threatening when asked to calm down by flight attendants. At one point, he even made menacing remarks about disrupting the flight, causing further alarm among those onboard.
The situation eventually led to MacDonald being restrained with flex cuffs, and the flight was diverted to Bangor, Maine, with 160 passengers onboard. Following the incident, MacDonald pleaded guilty to one count of interfering with a flight crew and was sentenced to time already served.
United Airlines, in a statement issued at the time, mentioned that the diversion occurred due to disruptive behavior from two passengers who appeared intoxicated. Law enforcement officials removed the individuals in question before the flight resumed its journey to Newark airport.
Instances of unruly behavior aboard flights saw a significant uptick during the pandemic, with tensions often fueled by issues like mask-wearing compliance. In response, the FAA announced in 2022 the implementation of a permanent zero-tolerance policy against disruptive passengers.
“Behaving recklessly onboard an aircraft comes with consequences,” emphasized Acting FAA Administrator Billy Nolen. “Our Zero Tolerance policy remains steadfast, serving as a deterrent and ensuring the safety and security of air travel for all.”
