Rabies Alert Issued for Westside Area of Duval County
The Florida Department of Health in Duval County (DOH-Duval) has issued a rabies alert for the Westside area following the discovery of a rabid cat. The alert will be in effect until August 1, 2024.
Affected Area:
- North: Highway 134
- South: Sandler Road
- East: Old Middleburg Road S
- West: Highway 23/First Coast Expressway
Precautionary Measures for Pet Owners:
- Vaccinate your pets: Ensure all pets are up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations as recommended by your veterinarian.
- Leash and supervise pets: Keep your pets on a leash and under direct supervision while outdoors.
- Secure livestock: Confine livestock securely on your property.
- Report animal bites: If your pet is bitten by another animal, seek immediate veterinary care and contact Animal Care and Protective Services at (904) 630-CITY (2489).
General Rabies Prevention Tips:
- Avoid contact with wild animals: Do not approach, feed, or handle wild or stray animals. Additionally, avoid attracting wildlife with open garbage cans, pet food left outdoors, or other food sources.
- Seek medical attention for bites: If you are bitten or scratched by a wild or domestic animal, consult a healthcare professional immediately. Report the injury to DOH-Duval at (904) 253-1280.
- Do not adopt wild animals: Wild animals should never be kept as pets. If you encounter wildlife in need, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

- Prevent wildlife entry: Seal any openings in your home, schools, or other buildings to prevent bats and other wildlife from entering living spaces.
