President Biden to Award Presidential Medal of Freedom to 19 Distinguished Individuals
In a significant gesture of recognition, President Joe Biden is set to bestow the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom upon 19 outstanding individuals this Friday. This highest civilian honor in the nation celebrates a diverse array of exceptional talents and contributions spanning politics, activism, and entertainment.
Among the esteemed recipients are notable figures such as former NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg, former Vice President Al Gore, and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. Additionally, key political figures including Rep. Jim Clyburn, Elizabeth Dole, and former Secretary of State John Kerry, as well as Biden’s former Democratic primary opponents, will be honored for their significant contributions.
The ceremony will also pay tribute to individuals who have championed crucial social causes. Opal Lee, affectionately dubbed the “grandmother of Juneteenth,” will be recognized for her tireless advocacy, alongside Judy Shepard, whose activism stems from the tragic loss of her son Matthew Shepard to a hate crime.
The list of honorees extends to luminaries in sports and science. Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh, swimming icon Katie Ledecky, and Dr. Ellen Ochoa, the first Hispanic woman to venture into space, will be acknowledged for their unparalleled achievements and groundbreaking milestones.
In a statement, the White House emphasized the extraordinary leadership and transformative impact of the selected individuals. Their collective efforts have not only shaped America but also exemplified the values of community, diligence, and public service. This distinguished group stands as a testament to the power of teamwork and dedication in driving positive change across the nation and beyond.
