Preventing UTIs: Expert Advice
UTIs, or urinary tract infections, pose a significant health concern for women worldwide, affecting millions. These infections, which target the bladder, urethra, kidneys, and ureters, are often instigated by bacteria infiltrating the urinary tract. Women are particularly vulnerable, with around half experiencing at least one UTI episode in their lives. Dr. Vikas Jain, Consultant and HOD – Urology, Robotic Surgery, and Kidney Transplantation at Manipal Hospital, Dwarka, explains that the shorter urethra in women compared to men makes it easier for bacteria to enter the bladder, heightening their susceptibility.
Moreover, hormonal fluctuations, such as those occurring during menstruation and menopause, can alter the urinary environment, further predisposing women to UTIs. Dr. Jain emphasizes the importance of preventive measures to combat this issue.
Preventive Measures:
Stay Hydrated: Drinking an ample amount of water aids in flushing bacteria out of the urinary tract, reducing the risk of infection.
