Update on US Military Humanitarian Efforts in Gaza
Construction Temporarily Paused Due to Weather Conditions
The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has announced a temporary pause in the construction of a humanitarian pier and causeway off the coast of Gaza. This decision comes in response to forecasted high winds and sea swells, which have created unsafe conditions for soldiers working on the partially constructed pier. Construction, which commenced last week, has now been relocated to the Port of Ashdod, one of Israel’s primary cargo ports north of Gaza.
Continued Efforts Despite Challenges
Despite the setback, the construction of the pier system, known as Joint Logistics Over the Shore (JLOTS), remains a priority. Up to 1,000 US troops are expected to be involved in its construction. The JLOTS system, once fully operational, could facilitate the delivery of up to 150 trucks per day to address the critical humanitarian needs in Gaza.
Ongoing Assessments and Adaptations
The success of the pier and causeway operation hinges on various factors, including weather conditions and the safety of US military personnel. Officials anticipate continuous assessments of sea state conditions, with operations potentially pausing as needed to ensure the safety of personnel involved.
Role of the Sagamore and Aid Delivery
The Sagamore, a massive container ship contracted by US Transportation Command, is slated to be the first vessel to transport humanitarian aid from Cyprus to the pier in Gaza. Standing over 600 feet long, the Sagamore symbolizes the scale of the aid effort. Once operational, other aid groups are expected to follow suit, contracting their own cargo ships to contribute to the aid delivery.
Signs of Progress
Despite challenges, progress is evident. USAID Administrator Samantha Power has reported the imminent arrival of over 500 pallets of humanitarian aid in Cyprus, soon to be routed through the maritime corridor to Gaza. This signifies a tangible step forward in addressing the urgent needs of the Gaza population.
