In the midst of the complex negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza, there’s talk of a groundbreaking agreement between Israel and Saudi Arabia that could reshape the Middle East. Advocates argue that such a deal might be the key to persuading Israel to step back from conflict and reignite peace efforts with the Palestinians.
According to reports, the proposed deal involves Saudi Arabia formally recognizing and establishing diplomatic ties with Israel, Israel making significant moves towards a Palestinian state, and the US providing security assurances to Saudi Arabia.
Diplomats hint that a deal might be on the horizon. One unnamed diplomat told Haaretz that Saudi Arabia is inclined towards an agreement with Israel as part of its rapprochement with the US. The Saudis reportedly expressed eagerness to finalize the deal during Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s recent visit. Negotiators are said to be finalizing the details, raising hopes of a swift resolution.
This isn’t the first time such talks have surfaced. Last September, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke of a potential peace deal with Saudi Arabia, but it never materialized. The stumbling block then, as now, was the Palestinian issue. Netanyahu’s hard-right coalition made it difficult for him to compromise on a two-state solution.
Despite the challenges, diplomatic efforts persist. Saudi Arabia, once a staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause, has shifted its priorities. With Iran’s growing influence in the region, Riyadh’s focus has turned towards containing its Shiite rival. Reports suggest extensive security cooperation between Israel and Saudi Arabia, particularly against Iran.
The Trump administration’s Abraham Accords paved the way for Arab countries to normalize relations with Israel. While several nations embraced the accords, Saudi Arabia remained cautious. Unlike the other signatories, the Saudis demand substantial concessions, given their regional leadership role and internal political dynamics.
Enter the Biden administration, keen to build on the Abraham Accords. Despite earlier tensions over human rights issues, Biden has sought to reset ties with Saudi Arabia, prioritizing regional stability and countering China’s influence. Negotiations now aim for a three-way normalization deal, including US security guarantees for Saudi Arabia.
However, the proposed treaty faces hurdles, including Senate ratification. Yet, for the Saudis, formalizing such commitments ensures stability amid shifting US administrations.
As diplomatic efforts continue, the potential Israel-Saudi Arabia deal remains a beacon of hope for a region marred by conflict.
