Warning: E. coli Outbreak Linked to Walnuts Sold in Local Stores
County Public Health officials are urging individuals to discard walnuts associated with a nationwide E. coli outbreak, which were distributed to 10 natural food stores and co-ops in the area.
Outbreak Details: Two cases of illness have been reported locally, both linked to the same strain of E. coli involved in a multi-state outbreak. The majority of affected individuals reported consuming walnuts from Gibson Farms, the implicated brand. One local individual required hospitalization due to illness.
Recall Notice: Gibson Farms Inc. has issued a recall of the walnuts, as they may be contaminated with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, posing serious health risks including hospitalization and potential fatalities.
Product Description: The affected walnuts were sold in bulk bins as halves or pieces starting from October 1, 2023. Some stores may have repackaged and sold the walnuts in individual bags or takeout containers for customer convenience.
Affected Stores: County officials have confirmed that all stores have removed the recalled product and sanitized storage bins. Affected stores include:
- Jimbos Naturally (locations in San Diego, Carlsbad, Escondido)
- Lazy Acres Market (locations in San Diego, Carlsbad)
- Ocean Beach Co-Op
- Frazier Farms Market (locations in La Mesa, Vista)
- Sun Organic Farm (San Marcos)
Safety Instructions: If you have purchased walnuts potentially affected by the recall, do not consume them. Dispose of them immediately and wash any containers or surfaces that came into contact with the walnuts thoroughly with hot, soapy water or in the dishwasher.
Symptoms of E. coli Contamination: E. coli infection can lead to severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting, typically occurring within three to four days after consumption. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.
