Sofia Vergara is eager to clarify the extensive effort and transformation involved in becoming Griselda Blanco for the upcoming Netflix series. During her appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Vergara corrected Clarkson’s assumption about minor changes, passionately sharing the complexities of the process. She emphasized that the transformation went beyond a wig, including teeth, a nose, and extensive prosthetics.
Despite Clarkson’s compliment on the subtle changes, Vergara revealed the behind-the-scenes work, highlighting the significant effort put into authentically portraying Griselda Blanco, known as “The Cocaine Godmother.” The actress explained that the process required hours of work from hairstylists and makeup artists. A pre-recorded video clip showcased the intricate hair and makeup process involved in Vergara’s complete transformation.
Speaking at the Miami red carpet premiere of the Netflix limited series “Griselda,” Vergara spoke exclusively to PEOPLE about the challenging transition from her usual comedic roles to portraying the notorious cartel leader. She described the role as necessitating a deep investigation into the complexities of being a woman in that era, a mother, and a Colombian woman transforming into a monstrous figure.
Vergara emphasized the relatability she found in the character, given their shared Colombian heritage, immigrant experiences, motherhood, and womanhood. Despite the difficulties in understanding the character, Vergara expressed a connection to Griselda Blanco, contributing to her ability to bring the role to life. Created by Eric Newman, known for Narcos and Narcos: Mexico, “Griselda” debuts on Netflix and features Vergara in the lead role alongside guest star Karol G, a Latin music sensation.
The series also includes actors Alberto Guerra, Christian Tappan, Martín Rodríguez, Juliana Aidén Martinez, and Vanessa Ferlito in various roles.
