What does Israel’s ban on Al Jazeera mean, and what happens next

The decision to shut down Al Jazeera in Israel was made unanimously by the cabinet, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announcing the move. Israeli Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi later released footage showing authorities raiding Al Jazeera’s office in East Jerusalem and seizing equipment.

Israel’s parliament passed a law allowing temporary closure of foreign media outlets, including Al Jazeera, if deemed a security threat. The law prohibits Al Jazeera’s website and television channel in Israel. Critics view the shutdown as a populist move to appease public opinion and radical right partners. Al Jazeera is closed for 45 days, with the possibility of renewal. Netanyahu had pledged immediate action upon the law’s passing, coinciding with critical negotiations with Hamas.

Israel has targeted Al Jazeera previously, including threats to its Jerusalem office in 2017 and destroying its Gaza office in 2021. Numerous Al Jazeera journalists and their families have been casualties in Israeli attacks, including during the ongoing Gaza conflict.
