Portland, Oregon, has found itself among the top 10 worst cities to drive in, according to a new study by Forbes Advisor. The study evaluated 47 of the most populated cities in the United States across various categories such as driving experience, safety, car ownership costs, and access to car maintenance.
Topping the list as the worst city for drivers is Oakland, California, due to factors like a high number of fatal car accidents, expensive gas prices, and lengthy average commute times. Following closely behind are Miami, Florida, San Francisco, California, Houston, Texas, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Portland secured its place as the 10th worst city to drive in, largely due to its high rate of car thefts and frequent rainy days. The metropolitan area of Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro ranks sixth highest in car thefts, with approximately 655.07 cars stolen per 100,000 residents. Additionally, Portland experiences an average of 153 rainy days per year, tying with San Francisco and Oakland for the slowest average rush hour speed at 23 miles per hour.
Furthermore, Portland drivers face the 11th highest gas prices in the nation, paying an average of $3.80 per gallon for regular gas.
Seattle, Washington, also made the list as the 18th worst city for drivers, with over four fatal car accidents per 100,000 residents and just over 600 car thefts per 100,000 residents.
On the flip side, Raleigh and Charlotte, North Carolina, were identified as two of the best cities to drive in.
The study revealed Boston, Massachusetts, as the worst for driving experience, Albuquerque, New Mexico, as the worst for driver safety, and New York City as the most expensive city to own a car.
