New iPad Pros Lack Always-On Display Despite Supporting Lower Refresh Rate

Apple’s latest 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models boast OLED displays capable of refreshing as low as 10Hz, a departure from previous versions that supported rates between 24Hz and 120Hz. Despite this advancement, these iPads still lack an always-on display option akin to the iPhone and Apple Watch.

Utilizing low-power LTPO technology, these new iPad Pro models can throttle down to 10Hz for static content, reducing power consumption. However, this adjustment doesn’t impact overall battery life, maintaining parity with previous generations.

This mirrors the progression seen in the iPhone 13 Pro series, which supported ProMotion down to 10Hz but lacked an always-on display, a feature introduced with the subsequent iPhone 14 Pro models, capable of dropping to 1Hz. Similarly, Apple Watch models with always-on displays also achieve a 1Hz refresh rate.

An always-on display option for the iPad Pro may be contingent on supporting a 1Hz refresh rate in the future. For now, Apple highlights the tandem OLED technology employed in these models, leveraging two OLED panels to deliver exceptional full-screen brightness of up to 1,000 nits for SDR content, a notable improvement over previous iterations.
