Earlier this week, Red Bull Racing announced that Adrian Newey would be departing the team after nearly two decades, marking the end of an era where he played a crucial role in designing cars that led Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen to multiple world championships.
Amidst the internal strife within Red Bull at the beginning of this year, Newey felt it was the right moment to part ways with the squad. While he will continue his involvement with the RB17 hypercar, he has decided to step away from Formula 1 and will be eligible to join other teams starting from March 2025.
This timing would allow Newey the opportunity to potentially influence the 2026 regulations shift. However, despite Ferrari expressing strong interest in acquiring his services, the 65-year-old has stated that he currently has “no plan” to join a rival team, as he feels the need for some time away from the sport.
In an interview with Sky Sports F1, Newey explained his decision, stating, “Formula 1 is all-consuming, and I’ve been immersed in it for a long time now. 2021 was particularly intense due to the close battle with Mercedes throughout the championship, as well as developing the RB18. I reached a point where, as Forrest Gump said, ‘I’m feeling a little bit tired.'”
When asked about the timing of his decision, Newey admitted, “I’ve been contemplating it for a while now. Over the winter, and as events unfolded this year, I felt that I am fortunate enough to not be dependent on work for my livelihood. I work because I enjoy it, and now feels like a good time to step back, take a break, and reassess life.”
Newey hinted at his plans for the future, saying, “My wife Mandy and I, along with our dogs, plan to travel. Perhaps we’ll get a motorhome and explore France, just enjoying life. And then, at some point down the line, I’ll likely find myself in the shower, contemplating the next adventure. But for now, there’s no concrete plan.”
Regarding Lewis Hamilton’s praise, Newey responded humbly, “It’s very flattering for Lewis to say that. Right now, I’m focused on taking a break and seeing what the future holds.”
