Albert, a 750-pound alligator, made headlines after being seized by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) from a home in Hamburg in March. After arrangements made by the DEC, Albert has now found a new home in Texas at Gator Country, an authorized alligator rehabilitation center located in Beaumont.
The move came after Albert demonstrated significant health improvement over the past few weeks, as confirmed by a veterinarian. Video footage from CBS affiliate KFDM captured Albert settling into his new environment, exploring the ponds within the facility.
Gary Saurage, the owner of Gator Country, commented on Albert’s condition, expressing understanding for those unhappy about his departure from his former home. Saurage emphasized that Albert’s living conditions were less than ideal and noted the importance of providing proper care for such animals.
Albert’s previous owner, Tony Cavallaro, had owned the alligator for over 30 years before the DEC intervened. Cavallaro revealed that he had treated Albert like a child, even going as far as constructing an addition to his house to accommodate the 11-foot reptile. However, Cavallaro’s permit to own an alligator had expired in 2021, leading to Albert’s removal.
Following his seizure, Albert underwent an extensive examination and initial rehabilitation in Massachusetts under licensed veterinary care. The DEC disclosed that Albert suffers from blindness and a spinal condition, further emphasizing the necessity of proper care for exotic animals.
The duration of Albert’s stay at Gator Country remains uncertain, with the DEC yet to provide details on his future plans. However, the move marks a significant step in ensuring the well-being of exotic animals and highlights the importance of responsible ownership and rehabilitation efforts.
