Former President Donald Trump and Ohio Senator J.D. Vance are teaming up for a fundraiser in Cincinnati on May 15th, as per an invitation obtained by CNN. The event, described as a lunch discussion, features Vance as a “special guest.” The host committee aims to raise $250,000, with attendees asked for $100,000 per couple or $50,000 per person.
Vance, who’s considered a potential running mate for Trump in 2024, has received Trump’s endorsement previously and is one of his staunch supporters in Congress. Trump has shown interest in Vance for the VP spot, according to reports.
Vance, however, stated on “Fox News Sunday” that he hasn’t directly discussed the vice presidency with Trump. He emphasized his close relationship with Trump but labeled talks of his vice-presidential candidacy as media speculation. Nonetheless, he expressed willingness to consider the offer if Trump were to propose it.
In an interview with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, Vance defended Trump on various issues. He expressed doubt about the danger to Mike Pence’s life during the January 6th events, echoing Trump’s assertion that he called for peaceful protests. Vance also backed Trump’s claims of absolute immunity, currently under Supreme Court review.
Regarding Trump’s recent remarks downplaying the 2017 Charlottesville rally, Vance echoed Trump’s stance, highlighting Trump’s condemnation of violence while acknowledging peaceful protests. He also noted Trump’s criticism of college protests.
Vance reiterated that he hasn’t discussed the VP position with Trump. Trump reportedly plans to announce his VP pick before the Republican convention in early summer, according to sources.
