Detroit Lions’ Offensive Coordinator Ben Johnson has made a noteworthy decision, opting to stay with the Lions instead of pursuing head coaching opportunities with other NFL teams this offseason. Amon-Ra St. Brown, a Lions receiver, shared this update on his “St. Brown Brothers” podcast, recounting a conversation with Johnson. According to St. Brown, Johnson called him on Tuesday morning, expressing his commitment to the Lions and revealing that he had unfinished business to address within the organization.
St. Brown conveyed that Johnson, after a sleepless night of contemplation, made the decision to return to the Lions. The team, having set their sights on winning a Super Bowl after making it to the NFC Championship Game, will benefit from Johnson’s continued contributions.
Upon receiving the news, St. Brown promptly informed Lions quarterback Jared Goff. On the podcast, St. Brown quoted Johnson as saying, “There’s unfinished business. He wants to stay.”
Despite having interviewed for head coaching positions with the Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, and Los Angeles Chargers, Johnson chose to remain loyal to the Lions. He also had opportunities to pursue head coaching roles with the Washington Commanders and Seattle Seahawks but opted to stay true to his commitment to Detroit.
Sources suggested that some teams may have hesitated due to Johnson’s asking price for a head coaching position. St. Brown emphasized on the podcast that Johnson’s heart is in Detroit, and he is determined to continue playing a crucial role in the team’s success.
