Variety’s Power of Women event, presented by Lifetime, was a day filled with solidarity, inspiration, and a call for change. Held at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City, the ceremony honored influential figures such as Shonda Rhimes, Anitta, Mariska Hargitay, and Amy Schumer, with comedian Amber Ruffin serving as the host.
The event began with a heartfelt tribute to Nicole Brown Simpson, led by her sisters Denise, Dominique, and Tanya Brown. Following the debut of the trailer for Lifetime’s upcoming docuseries, “The Life and Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson,” the sisters expressed their pride in finally giving Nicole a voice through the series. They emphasized the importance of addressing domestic violence, noting that it impacts everyone, regardless of gender.
Tears flowed as Denise Brown spoke passionately about her sister’s strength and resilience in the face of adversity. Her emotional remarks moved Hargitay, who immediately embraced the Brown sisters in a show of solidarity.
As the honorees took the stage, each shared their personal journey of overcoming obstacles. Anitta discussed breaking free from cultural norms and societal expectations, while Schumer emphasized the importance of using one’s voice for change, particularly in advocating for gun safety.
Rhimes echoed the theme of empowerment, highlighting the inclusive environment fostered by Debbie Allen’s Dance Academy. She stressed the importance of valuing every individual and providing equal opportunities for all.
Throughout the event, there was a sense of urgency in calling for systemic change, especially in leadership. Hargitay spoke passionately about ending patriarchal impunity and the need for more women to speak out against injustice. She referenced Harvey Weinstein’s conviction as a step forward but emphasized the ongoing struggle for gender equality.
The event concluded with music curated by DJ Daisy O’Dell, leaving attendees inspired and motivated to continue advocating for women’s rights and empowerment.
