In a recent interview for WSJ Magazine’s “The One” video series, Ryan Gosling opened up about a moment from the 2016 film “La La Land” that still bothers him.
Gosling revealed that if given the chance, he would reshoot the iconic dance sequence with his co-star Emma Stone, which was featured on the movie’s promotional poster. The actor confessed that a particular aspect of the scene, which he referred to as his “La La Hand,” continues to haunt him.
Recalling the moment, Gosling explained that during the dance, he placed his hand in an unconventional position, with his wrist slanting downwards compared to Stone’s hand. This decision, which he thought would be cool at the time, turned out to be a regrettable choice.
Despite being advised against it, Gosling persisted with his idea, only to realize later that it did not enhance the scene as he had hoped. Reflecting on the experience, he humorously described his hand position as “hamburger-hands Gosling,” admitting that it ultimately disrupted the flow of the dance sequence.
When asked if his background in dance helped him prepare for the role of Sebastian in “La La Land,” Gosling expressed disappointment, jokingly referring to himself as “hamburger-hands Gosling” once again. He acknowledged that his dance experience did not contribute positively to the performance as he had initially anticipated.
Despite his misgivings about the dance scene, Gosling’s performance in “La La Land” earned him critical acclaim, culminating in an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. The film itself received widespread recognition, winning six Academy Awards that year.
