An African lion, beloved by visitors, has passed away at an Ocean County zoo after spending the last decade as one of its prominent residents. The Popcorn Park Animal Refuge in Forked River announced on Tuesday the death of “Simba,” who had been a cherished member of the zoo operated by the Associated Humane Societies.
Simba’s recent demise followed a long and eventful life at the refuge, although the cause of his death was not disclosed. There’s no indication whether the lion had been unwell prior to his passing.
Renowned for his powerful roar, Simba was a fixture at the zoo, with his distinctive vocalizations resonating across the area each morning. John Bergmann, the executive director of Popcorn Park, fondly recalled how Simba’s roar held special significance for everyone at the refuge, serving as a symbol of the bond between the animal and his caretakers.
Simba’s journey at the zoo began in 2014 when he arrived severely underweight. Over the years, he was nursed back to health by the dedicated staff at Popcorn Park after being relocated from a facility in Alabama due to his owner’s illness.
Situated off Lacey Road, Popcorn Park is a sanctuary spanning 7 acres and is home to a diverse array of animals, including lions, tigers, and bears. The loss of Simba follows the passing of Legolas, an olive baboon, earlier this year, who succumbed to old age after arriving at the zoo in 2015.
