In the next two years, residents and business owners in Cedar Park will have the opportunity to access high-speed and high-bandwidth internet services provided by Google Fiber.
According to a news release on May 9, Google Fiber plans to offer connection speeds of up to 8 gigabits per second throughout the city, with no data caps, equipment fees, or annual contracts.
Mayor Jim Penniman-Morin expressed excitement about the prospect, stating, “Cedar Park is now more globally connected than ever… With Google Fiber, we’re excited to offer another pathway for internet connectivity.”
During its May 9 meeting, the council unanimously approved a nonexclusive public rights-of-way license agreement with Google Fiber Texas, LLC. This agreement will allow the company to install, maintain, and operate a fiber-optic infrastructure network in the city’s public rights of way.
The fiber-optic installation process involves laying cables at street level through shallow trenches, connecting them to an outdoor network interface box and an indoor Fiber Jack that links to a router.
Google Fiber will pay a license fee equivalent to 1% of gross revenues back to the city for its use of public rights of way.
Construction by Google Fiber is expected to commence before the end of 2025, with services becoming available in early 2026.
Cedar Park will become the fourth city in Texas to receive Google Fiber services, following Austin, San Antonio, and Round Rock.
