“Saturday Night Live” decided to take a jab at celebrities who use the red carpet as a platform for their political activism, especially ahead of the star-studded Met Gala.
In a parody commercial, the show introduced the “Teeny Tiny Statement Pin,” a supposedly subtle way for celebrities to convey their opinions without imposing them on others. The pin is comically small, requiring special glasses to even see it properly.
Cast member Bowen Yang and host Dua Lipa humorously endorse the pin, highlighting its ability to allow them to express their views without being too overt about it.
The skit poked fun at the typical political messages seen on red carpet pins, offering satirical alternatives like “Free Ellen” and “We have the meats.” For those who want to appear socially conscious without committing to a specific cause, there’s the “Vague Collection,” featuring pins with ambiguous phrases like “It has to stop” and “It has to start.”
The segment also referenced real instances of celebrities sporting political pins, such as the “Time’s Up” pin and the red hand pin worn at the Oscars, which sparked controversy due to its association with a violent incident in the Middle East.
While some Hollywood figures, like Billie Eilish and Mark Ruffalo, wore the red hand pin to advocate for peace, critics pointed out its contentious history dating back to a tragic event involving Israeli soldiers.
