Nearly 30 candy products with a liquid white-coating have been recalled due to concerns about potential salmonella contamination.
Palmer Candy Company initiated the recall after being notified by its liquid coating supplier about possible contamination in an ingredient from one of their suppliers.
The Iowa-based candy company voluntarily recalled 29 different varieties of treats, which were distributed nationwide at major retailers such as Walmart, HyVee, Target, and Dollar General, as well as to various distributors across several states.
The recalled items were sold under various brand names, including Palmer, Freshness Guaranteed, Sweet Smiles, Snackin’ With The Crew, Casey’s, Sconza Chocolates, Favorite Day Bakery, Sunny Select, Urge!, and Kwik Trip Inc. They were packaged in bags, pouches, and tubs, with many of the products being coated pretzels or cookies.
Although no illnesses have been reported, production of the candy has been halted while the FDA and the company investigate the source of the problem.
Salmonella infection can cause symptoms like diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, typically appearing within six hours to six days after consuming contaminated food. While most cases resolve within a week, severe illnesses may occur in vulnerable individuals, including children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.
Consumers who have purchased white-coated confectionary items manufactured by Palmer Candy Company are urged to return them for a full refund. Photos of all recalled candy products are available on the FDA’s website.
