Cheney recirculates Stefanik’s Jan. 6 statement after she reportedly deletes it.

Former House Republican leader Liz Cheney has drawn attention to a curious incident involving her colleague, Rep. Elise Stefanik. Cheney shared a link on Twitter to a statement made by Stefanik regarding the January 6th Capitol attack, only to find that the statement had been deleted from Stefanik’s website shortly after. This move has raised eyebrows and led to speculation about the reasons behind it.

Stefanik’s original statement, which Cheney shared, condemned the violence at the Capitol on January 6th, 2021, describing it as “anti-American” and calling for the perpetrators to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. However, Stefanik’s stance on the matter appears to have shifted since then. In a recent appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” she expressed concerns about the treatment of individuals who were in the Capitol on that day, using the term “hostages” to describe them.

Cheney, who has been a vocal critic of former President Trump and his allies, including Stefanik, did not mince words in her response to the deletion of Stefanik’s statement. She referred to Stefanik as a “total crackpot” and criticized her for changing her characterization of the events of January 6th. Cheney has been actively involved in the investigation into the Capitol attack and has repeatedly called out those who seek to downplay or distort the severity of what transpired on that day.

The incident highlights the ongoing tensions within the Republican Party between those who are willing to confront the truth about January 6th and those who continue to defend or downplay the events of that day. It also raises questions about the integrity and consistency of statements made by elected officials, particularly in relation to matters as serious as the assault on the Capitol and the erosion of democratic norms.

As the investigation into the January 6th attack continues and the political fallout from the event reverberates throughout the GOP, Cheney’s actions serve as a reminder of the importance of holding elected officials accountable for their words and actions, especially when they seek to rewrite or delete history.
