A TikTok video has gone viral featuring a mother who discovered that her daughter’s complaint about hearing “monsters” in the walls turned out to be a swarm of 50,000 bees that had somehow made their way into their home.
Ashley Massis Class, from North Carolina, shared her shocking experience with Fox News Digital via TikTok messenger. She explained that three weeks prior, they had noticed some bees flying around near the attic vent, but initially didn’t think much of it. However, after the bees persisted, Class called pest control and later beekeepers to investigate.
After consulting multiple beekeepers, one of them decided to cut a hole in the attic wall to locate the source of the bees. Using a thermal camera, they discovered that the bees had entered the house through an attic vent, which had a hole smaller than the tip of a pen.
Removing the bees from their home proved to be a challenging task for Class. She mentioned that the process was extensive because the honeycomb contained honey, which dripped into the floorboards of their 100-year-old house, saturating each plank. The beekeeper ended up removing over 100 pounds of honey and honeycomb from the wall.
Class documented the ordeal on TikTok, with one video amassing over 9 million views and eliciting over 1,400 comments from shocked users. Many expressed their disbelief and sympathy, while others shared similar experiences with bees invading their homes.
Despite not expecting her video to go viral, Class was surprised by the overwhelming response from people who could relate to her situation. The family incurred $20,000 in damages from the bee infestation, which is not covered by insurance. It will take at least two weeks to confirm that the bees are gone and an additional two to three weeks for home repairs to be completed.
