Anthropic, a rival to OpenAI, is shaking up the chatbot landscape by introducing its Claude chatbot to iPhones. Led by former OpenAI staff who left due to differences with CEO Sam Altman, Anthropic aims to challenge ChatGPT and win over everyday users with its product, which already surpasses ChatGPT in some measures of intelligence.
Scott White of Anthropic emphasized the importance of meeting users where they are, particularly on their mobile devices, stating, “We’re putting the power of Claude directly into people’s hands. It’s not just about convenience; it’s about integrating Claude into the fabric of our daily lives.”
The latest version of the Claude large language model offers three options on its website: “haiku” for speed and simplicity, “sonnet” for greater power, and the full “opus” system for paying customers. Opus has made waves by topping the LMSys chatbot ranking and boasts an impressive “context window,” allowing it to retain extensive conversation history.
Until now, ChatGPT has had limited competition on user devices, but with the introduction of the Claude app, Anthropic aims to offer new features beyond convenience. The app can access the device’s camera and photo library, enabling users to leverage Claude for tasks such as summarizing whiteboard diagrams or identifying plant species.
In addition to the iOS app, Anthropic is expanding its business offerings with a “team” plan, allowing corporate customers to provide chatbot access to their entire staff. White emphasized Anthropic’s commitment to leading AI safety and research, stating that competition is essential for driving positive industry change.
This competition has already prompted a response from OpenAI, which recently updated its policies to allow users to access their entire ChatGPT history without opting in to data training.
