Condemnation of Attack on Mugunga Camp for Internally Displaced Persons in Eastern DRC
We, the United States, issue a resolute condemnation of the attack perpetrated today by the Rwanda Defense Forces (RDF) and M23 positions on the Mugunga camp for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This egregious act has resulted in the tragic deaths of at least nine individuals and has left at least 33 others wounded, including numerous women and children.
Concerns and Call for Action
We express profound concern regarding the recent expansion of RDF and M23 activities in eastern DRC, which has led to the displacement of over 2.5 million people. We implore both parties to uphold human rights principles and adhere strictly to the applicable obligations under international humanitarian law.
Respect for Sovereignty and Human Rights
It is imperative for all nations to honor each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Furthermore, it is incumbent upon all parties to hold accountable those responsible for human rights violations within the conflict in eastern DRC.
Support for Diplomatic Efforts
We reaffirm our unwavering support for regional diplomatic initiatives aimed at resolving the ongoing crisis. We call upon all stakeholders to take proactive measures to de-escalate tensions, safeguard civilian populations, and engage constructively in dialogue to facilitate a negotiated resolution and foster enduring peace.
In conclusion, we stand firm in our commitment to promoting peace, stability, and respect for human rights in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the wider region.
