Dak Prescott, whose focus is on 2024, reiterates that he wants to remain with the Cowboys long term.

The Cowboys keep saying Dak Prescott is a part of their long-term plans, but they haven’t actually done anything to make that happen. Prescott himself said on Thursday that he wants to stay with the Cowboys for his entire career, but he knows it might not work out that way.

He’s entering the last year of his contract, and since his deal has a no-tag clause, he could leave after this season. “It’s still conversations,” Prescott said, according to Patrik Walker of the Cowboys’ team website. “I’m aware of everything [team owner Jerry Jones] said, and he’s right on the mark—communication has been back-and-forth. . . . Ultimately, I’ve made it clear this is where I want to be, but my focus is on helping my team. It’s as simple as that. . . . I’m just focused on helping this team and being the best I can be and getting better.”

The Cowboys and Prescott negotiated for almost two years before he got his second contract, and they don’t seem to be anywhere near reaching a third deal. Until they do, there’s a chance Prescott could leave for another team next year.

That said, the Cowboys still have Prescott for this season, and that gives them some hope despite their lack of bold moves this offseason. Last season, with head coach Mike McCarthy calling the plays, Prescott had a fantastic year. He made second-team All-Pro and was a runner-up for the MVP, with Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson taking the top spot.

When asked about his goal for 2024, Prescott replied, “To continue to get better. We barely scratched the surface. This was our first year with Mike calling the shots [on offense]. We kept improving all year long. We had a lot of good things going last year, and we’re taking those into our game plan this offseason to be more prepared for different scenarios during the season. The added preparation will help us focus on the details and avoid having to adjust later on. Another year with Mike is going to be special.”
