Most NFL draft picks selected on Day 3—Rounds 4 through 7—usually play supporting roles and work on special teams during their rookie seasons. But a few manage to break through and start regularly. Others included Raiders’ quarterback Aidan O’Connell, offensive linemen Anthony Bradford (Seahawks), Blake Freeland (Colts), Dawand Jones (Browns), Sidy Sow (Patriots), wide receiver Trey Palmer (Buccaneers), defensive lineman Dante Stills (Cardinals), and cornerbacks Jaylon Jones (Colts) and Carrington Valentine (Packers).
Rookies’ playing time depends on their talent, but injuries to starters and the depth of their position group can also play a big role. Here’s a list of 15 Day 3 picks from the 2024 NFL Draft who could start in their first year, ranked by their likelihood of grabbing and holding onto those opportunities.
Bortolini, who played center for Wisconsin in 2023, was drafted by the Colts as a guard. Throughout his college career, he started at every offensive line position except left tackle, so he’s got the versatility to fit in wherever needed. While Bortolini could eventually take over at center from Ryan Kelly, who might leave after the 2024 season, he could also compete at right guard with Will Fries, who is in his contract’s final year.
The Raiders had some trouble with their cornerback group last year, especially because they lacked size. So it made sense for the 6-foot-2 Richardson to end up in Las Vegas. He’s got a sub-4.4 40-yard dash time and plays physically at 188 pounds, though his short-range agility is just average. Still, his size and physicality could help him secure a bigger role as he adjusts to the NFL level.
