NBA veteran Doc Rivers has reportedly accepted the offer to become the next head coach for the Milwaukee Bucks, according to a source familiar with the discussions. This decision comes after the Bucks fired their first-year head coach, Adrian Griffin, after 43 games earlier on the same day, citing the need to “immediately” hire a new head coach. Griffin had been with the team since June 2023.
Bucks General Manager Jon Horst mentioned in a statement that the decision to part ways with Griffin was challenging, especially during the ongoing season. CNN has sought comments from the Bucks regarding this development.
Doc Rivers previously coached the Philadelphia 76ers for three seasons, parting ways with the team in May last year after three consecutive losses in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. At the time, the Sixers’ President of Basketball Operations praised Rivers as one of the most successful coaches in NBA history. Rivers, aged 62, has an extensive coaching career, having served as the head coach for the Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Clippers, and the Boston Celtics, leading the latter to an NBA championship in 2008.
During TNT’s “Inside the NBA” on Tuesday night, co-host Shaquille O’Neal expressed happiness for Doc Rivers, highlighting his championship experience and ability to handle superstar players. Rivers has been credited with being more than just a basketball coach; he emphasizes coaching life and believes in opening up one’s heart to become a champion.
In an interview with CNN’s Poppy Harlow in November, Rivers shared his coaching philosophy, emphasizing the importance of being a teacher and guiding players not only in basketball skills but also in life. He encouraged players to take risks, get out of their comfort zones, and give themselves to the team.
The Milwaukee Bucks, currently tied for the second-best record in the NBA at 30-13, will host the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday under the anticipated coaching leadership of Doc Rivers.
